She often laid 6 eggs and bought out 5 living babies. She would not stay out of the nest so we just left her to do what she was happy doing. We tried taking the nest put but she laid her eggs on the ground. I think we were just lucky and had the perfect pair.

From J Ovenden Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01450203761427639817noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5494114951266176145.post-37968277218129950162019-06-29T14:53:13.896-07:002019-06-29T14:53:13.896-07:00I've got the same issue. When they take flight to the floor, I offer a perch for them to step onto, then I place them back in the cage area. All my birds have been stick trained this way. And it seems to be the only reliable one out there! I subscribe to your YouTube channel I can’t wait for my bourkes to start breeding! I currently have a trio I bought them as 2 females 1 Male but..... looks more like 2 males 1 female! My normal hen and Rosa cock feed each other and he does little heart wings like a cockatiel it’s adorable! He has picked a box recently but I am yet to see her enter but my fingers are crossed for babies this year! My pink and yellow is definitely a Male as he also does heart wings and has picked a box but I will have to find him a girl. I wanted to have sex linked males with normal hens to help me sex my babies for selling so I think this has worked out well for meAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03334527725609818032noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5494114951266176145.post-70685675003344437662018-12-24T08:31:56.964-08:002018-12-24T08:31:56.964-08:00Lovely to see this I want to make mine some toys ...Lovely to see this I want to make mine some toys and got good ideas from this video ThanksAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08399512710462681047noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5494114951266176145.post-30747231485912718582018-09-25T03:13:01.441-07:002018-09-25T03:13:01.441-07:00It should be avoided. They have lived together peacefully for about 6 months. My husband just finished making nest boxes which we attached to their cages today. The bonded pair are continuing to act normal, but the male in the other pair (definitely a male) started chasing around his pal today (I think it’s a female but it could be a male). The bird that’s being chased is a little over a year old and smaller than the male. I removed the male to a separate cage and thought I’d wait a day to reintroduce him to the cage and see if things improve. Any thoughts to what is going on? The two pairs are housed in a similar set up to yours with the cages by each other. ✾Jamie Lee Cooley✾https://www.blogger.com/profile/07208832897656210176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5494114951266176145.post-53948488497076572192018-04-06T11:24:51.432-07:002018-04-06T11:24:51.432-07:00Hello my dear friend, my rosey bourkes have a baby...Hello my dear friend, my rosey bourkes have a baby with red eyes in their first clutch, I was suprised, becouse the parent are both rosey bourkes, Is t possible that the babie is a rosey with red Eyes. ??
Thank you.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12479182097720040222noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5494114951266176145.post-83187450847004688482018-04-05T14:35:35.272-07:002018-04-05T14:35:35.272-07:00Thank you, Kim. When I first had Bourke's I adopted a set of three from my local shelter. I'd been looking for Bourke's for many years in my area and no one was breeding them; I had first fel in love with them when I was about 13 years old when my cousin showed me them in a pet store. Oh their pink color! I would dream about pink birds over and over again:) Anyway, my first was 2 girls and a boy (the shelter had no idea what they were.) One of the girls had a hernia, likely from over egg-laying. She apparently was older according to the vet and passed away about 6mo - year after adopting. My other girl became very broody then, and began laying clutch after clutch (I believe I talked to you about her years back.) None of the eggs were ever fertilized by the boy (definitely a boy, normal with lots of blue above the keer, but later found not in the best of health at that time so that's maybe why.) Anyway, this went on for maybe 3 years with me doing all the tips to discourage egg laying, and then just sitting on the clutch, not moving, not eating for way too long with eggs not hatching (it was sooooooo sad.) And eventually one day she passed away. She had just depleted herself so much:( My male became depressed and I looked for another partner. Lo and behold, another shelter had just taken in a rosey Bourke that had flown into a volunteer's van one day! I went to adopt the bird not knowing the sex. Well, I adopted "Lynn" who wound up becoming a "Lyndon." I wasn't sure if the two boys would hit it off but honestly I really hoped so because I didn't want to breed. (I talked to Gail about this too:) And I got really lucky because these two guys are two peas in a pod. They have been best buds for 3 1/2 years now. I kept thinking if one passed away I didn't know if I should look for another male companion, but always felt bad about denying them the "love" factor. With the idea of having a different species, I could still have the Bourke I love and give them a "mate." What a splendid idea! (hey, maybe I'll get a Splendid?!?!)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18409361271517774070noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5494114951266176145.post-83912578615880683832018-04-03T13:18:25.834-07:002018-04-03T13:18:25.834-07:00He is absolutely beautiful, as are all your birds!...He is absolutely beautiful, as are all your birds!

Theresa Michelsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5494114951266176145.post-27330192207132204192018-03-28T01:30:00.792-07:002018-03-28T01:30:00.792-07:00Hi, I always try to follow up your blog. Problem Male pretend to nesting but not really interest to mating. I kept them in a divider cage 96cm x 653cm x 63cm housing with a pair of Linnies. Linnies raised several clutches. now-a-days 2/3rd of spaces of this cage I reserve for Bourke's.Every morning I used to offer every alternate day boiled eggs, sweet corns with other vegetable like soybean sprouts, broccoli etc. respectively. Other supplements like cuttlebone, rabbit salt, mineral blocks in cage, ALso mixed seeds and egg food always in cage. Even Oster mixed sea sand in a bowl. nest box 30x25x25 in cm. FYI, Bourke's not available here. I'm meaning in Singapore. SO no way, I've to play only with this pair. Appreciate any suggestion about my male.
Kanti dashttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01913656213549804315noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5494114951266176145.post-34761609748813990012018-03-04T17:39:38.146-08:002018-03-04T17:39:38.146-08:00Hello, what an interesting informative site you ha...Hello, what an interesting informative site you have. Its not that easy to get detailed informations about bourke parakeets.
I happen to have two of them since about 2 jours, they are already 8 years of age, a male and a female and have started breeding a week ago. its the third time they breed, the eggs were not fertile the first two times and they did not have a regular breeding box. This time they got a nice one attached to the cage.
So I was wondering if they need a special diet when breeding and read about the egg mix you prepare. From now on, I will give it more often, they eat it without bread crumbs, just the egg crushed and mixed with the shell, and besides that they eat grains, essentially, since they are breeding, I have noticed that they don't touch the greens, but they very much love crushed cashews and sunflower seeds. Is that al right? they are also offered germinated seeds every day, they love those. Do I continue germinated seeds when the young ones are hatched ? (if there are any) I also have read somewhere not to feed greens and fruit to the parents while they feed the chicks. Is that correct ? It's the first time I got birds who are breeding, and I really want to make it right to allow them to stay healthy and correctly feed the chicks.
could you please make some comments on this ? That would really greatly help, big thank you in advance.
One last thing: the male spends the whole day in the nest with the female, that's contrary to the information you give... is this normal or just uncommon ?
Thanks again, on behalf of Harold and Maude :-)
RebekkaRebekkahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08290926193087411550noreply@blogger.com
